Music Theory Lessons in North London

Music theory is the foundation that makes everything else in music make sense. Whether you are preparing for an ABRSM theory exam, looking to understand the music you already play, or starting from scratch, I offer one-to-one music theory lessons for students of all ages and levels.

What Is Music Theory?

Music theory covers how music is written, structured, and organised — including notation, scales, intervals, chords, rhythm, and harmony. Understanding these concepts does not just help you pass an exam. It makes you a faster learner, a more expressive player, and a more independent musician.

Who Are Theory Lessons For?

Music theory lessons are suitable for a wide range of students:

  • Students preparing for ABRSM theory exams at any grade — from Grade 1 through to Grade 5 and beyond.
  • Instrument students who want to deepen their understanding of the music they are already playing.
  • Adult learners who are curious about how music works and want to understand it more fully.
  • Students who have been told they need Grade 5 Theory before sitting a higher ABRSM performance exam.

ABRSM Music Theory Exam Preparation

Passing ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory is a requirement for students wishing to sit Grade 6, 7, or 8 performance exams. I prepare students for theory exams at all grade levels, building knowledge systematically and ensuring students are confident with every area of the syllabus before exam day.

Theory Alongside Instrument Lessons

For students who take instrument lessons with me, music theory is integrated naturally into every session — connected directly to the pieces and skills being developed. This makes theory far more meaningful and easier to retain than studying it in isolation.

For students who only want theory lessons, I offer dedicated one-to-one theory tuition as a standalone subject.

Home Visits Across North London

Theory lessons can take place at my home studio in Southgate or at your home. I offer home visits across North London, including Southgate, Enfield, Barnet, Finchley, Palmers Green, Muswell Hill, Wood Green, and many surrounding areas.

About Your Teacher

My name is Saygın. I graduated from Ege University State Conservatoire in Turkey, where I studied piano and clarinet, and completed a pedagogical formation programme at the same university — giving me both the musical training and the formal teaching skills to work with students of all ages and backgrounds.

Over a 20-year career, I have taught, performed and published. Before moving to London, I performed regularly on national television and major radio stations, and worked as a studio musician on album, commercial and film recordings. In 2019, I published Klarnet Eğitimi — a comprehensive clarinet method book.

In 2020, I moved to London and established North London Music Lessons. My youngest students are five years old — and I also teach working adults who are picking up an instrument for the first time.
